Residence time distribution: an old concept in chemical engineering, a new application in pol ymer processing

>Abstract: The mankind truly entered the era of polymer materials in the 20th century and will stay in this era in the 21r st century. This is due to cheap resources, unique properties and easy processing of polym ers. Indeed it may not be exaggerating to say that the ultimate success of a polyme r is dictated not only by its properties b ut also by its processability. How good its properties may be, a polymer that is not or hardly processable is not a good mater ial. Just keep in mind that 90% of polymer s are processed at least once in their lif e time. Moreover, processing may greatly alter polymer properties in a desired or an und esired manner. While the polymer industries consider polymer processing as a key to improving their competitiveness, the Chinese polymer scientif ic community often considers that is it is as elegant or sexy as polymer chemistry o r physics. Screw extruders are the most importa nt piece of polymer processing equipment. They are divided into two main types: single a nd twin screw extruders. The latter are often used as continuous mixers and/or reactors for preparing multiphase polymer materials such as polymer (nano-) blends and polymer (nano-)composite s. Residence time distribution (RTD), an old co ncept in chemical engineering, can be very impo rtant for such operations. This presentation is aimed at further trigging the awareness of the Chinese polymer community to the importanc e of polymer processing upon addressing the the oretical and practical significance of the RTD and its attainment by CFD simulations or in-line measurements, on the one hand; and showing a very interesting application of the RTD in polymer blending, on the other han d.
